The Challenge
The Spencer's Pub is a popular destination in Hagley, with customers regularly using both the car park and outdoor seating area throughout the day. Positioned directly alongside these public spaces was a towering mature cypress tree that had gradually become an issue for the business.
The tree extended over sections of the car park and shaded much of the outdoor seating area, limiting sunlight during the warmer months. While healthy, its sheer size dominated the entrance to the pub and reduced the openness of the frontage.
Removing a tree in this type of environment requires far more than simply cutting it down. The surrounding access roads, parked vehicles, neighbouring properties and members of the public all had to be considered before any work could begin.

Our Solution
Following an on-site assessment, the CJ Tree Surgeons team developed a carefully planned method of work to safely remove the tree using a controlled straight fell.
Given the public-facing location, extensive preparation was carried out before work commenced. The working area was managed to keep vehicles and pedestrians safely away from the operation, while ensuring disruption to the pub's day-to-day activities was kept to an absolute minimum.
Every stage of the removal was completed in a controlled manner, allowing the large cypress to be felled safely despite its prominent position overlooking the car park and customer seating.
The resulting timber and debris were removed from site, leaving the area clean, tidy and ready for immediate use.
The Results
The transformation was immediate.
With the cypress removed, the frontage of The Spencer's became noticeably brighter and far more open. The outdoor seating area now benefits from significantly more natural sunlight, creating a more welcoming environment for customers, while the entrance to the pub appears larger and less enclosed.
Removing the overhanging tree has also given the client greater flexibility when using the outdoor space and improved visibility across the front of the premises.
